E-Plus Opens LTE Customer Lab

E-Plus Opens the First LTE Customer Lab World-Wide
- E-Plus Group and Nokia Siemens Networks to invest two million Euros in university customer research
- Researchers of Chemnitz Technical University co-operating with MUGLER AG to develop new methods and means for quality measurement in mobile Internet
A novel mobile communication test network of the 4th generation developed by Nokia-Siemens-Networks was put into operation on the campus of Chemnitz Technical University. As of now, this network shall provide sound and reliable research results on the customers' view on the utilization of high-speed LTE network. In terms of co-operation, E-Plus and Nokia Siemens Networks are investing over two million Euros in the Chemnitz research center.
"We would like to know the exact aspects which are decisive for a positive customer experience during network expansion. The researchers of Chemnitz Technical University develop for us new methods for quality measurement and, doing so, will map the actual customers' view true to detail for the first time", explains Rafal Markiewicz, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of E-Plus Group. "We anticipate fundamental insights in the customers' relevance of up-to-date mobile communication networks as, for the first time, the current customers' needs are in the focus of technical network research work". E-Plus would like to integrate the research results in the future network configuration – for the best data network from the customers' point of view.
Live investigations planned with up to 200 users
The research work done at Chemnitz Technical University will show the opportunities offered by LTE standard to the mobile phone users of tomorrow. "Our goal is to gather as much experience as possible to improve user-oriented mobile communication networks and services. To this end, we are further developing our investigation and measurement methods which we can base onto the fundamentals of research results acquired so far", says Prof. Dr. Ulrich Heinkel, owner of the chair in circuit and system design. Planned are, among others, live investigations with up to 200 users. E-Plus and Nokia Siemens Networks will support the Chemnitz Technical University in the LTE test network and other research projects with altogether more than two million Euros for the next four years to come.
LTE test network is the basis for long-term research work
The self-contained test network developed by MUGLER AG and E-Plus and equipped with the Long Term Evaluation (LTE) technology of Nokia Siemens Networks is an essential component of the co-operation agreement. It is comprised of several antenna sites around the TU campus and a switching network. "LTE as the latest generation of mobile communication technology is just in the introductory stage", explains Prof. Dr. Albrecht Mugler, CEO of MUGLER AG on the world-wide importance of the newly established Chemnitz LTE research center. The high LTE transmission rates would be actually used as pure data network first of all for quick access to the mobile Internet. "Further to the high transmission rates, LTE is mainly characterized by faster processing speeds and enhanced cost efficiency. And, besides data, LTE will soon transfer languages, too", explains Dr. Ingo Goldenberg, Head of Customer Team of the E-Plus Group at Nokia Siemens Networks.
