Indoor Coverage – Preventing bad luck turning into disaster
Major alarm in the shopping mall: Pitch-black smoke oozes out of a store downstairs, shortly afterwards, flames burst out of the entrance area. It is Friday evening, numerous shoppers are staying inside the building. The moving-in fire department has to evacuate the building and extinguish the spreading fire, paramedics are taking care of the injured, a lot of them are in a state of shock.
In order to coordinate the efficient work of rescue forces during such a mission, they must be connected with their operation controllers and with each other via radio. Thereto, radio supply has to work reliably and area-wide inside the building. The closest base station or relay station, however, does not often suffice for this; reinforced concrete, metal-vapor-deposited windows and steel doors absorb the propagation of signals too strongly. Supplementary measures must be taken. Such measures will become even more extensive in the course of digitization as digital radio shows a worse penetration and, thus, worse indoor coverage than the so far used analog radio.
