MUGLER and Kontron deploy private 5G network at TH Rosenheim

PRESS RELEASE

Rosenheim, 23 January 2025 – MUGLER SE, a leading service provider and system integrator for telecommunications and data networks in Germany, has successfully deployed a state-of-the-art private 5G network at proto_lab, the research laboratory at Rosenheim Technical University of Applied Sciences (TH Rosenheim). This innovative network provides the foundation for the university’s advanced research projects and offers students an interactive learning platform to explore the immense potential of 5G technology. The project is a collaboration between Mugler and Kontron, a leading international provider of technologies for Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things.

“Connecting increasingly mobile participants in the value chain is becoming a decisive competitive factor in highly flexible production and logistics architectures designed for customisation,” explains Prof. Dr.-Ing. Oliver Kramer, initiator, co-founder and head of the proto_lab@TH Rosenheim research and development platform. “Our private 5G network provides the ideal foundation for implementing and further developing our R&D projects at proto_lab.”

“At Kontron, we are proud to be part of a project that not only advances pioneering research but also offers invaluable learning opportunities to the next generation of innovators,” says Janez Öri, Executive Director of Communications Solutions at Kontron. “The deployment of our private 5G network demonstrates our commitment to supporting industry and academic institutions with reliable, high-performance connectivity solutions that drive transformation and progress.”

“The network marks the starting point for a comprehensive four-year collaboration in which a range of industry-focused use cases will be tested,” explains Dr. Markus Dod, Director Local Networks at Mugler SE. “At Mugler SE, we focus on delivering reliable, future-ready telecommunications solutions. This partnership with Kontron and TH Rosenheim demonstrates how 5G technology, combined with practical integration expertise, can deliver real progress. Our goal is to demonstrate how tailored 5G networks can effectively support both industry and academia in advancing connectivity and automation.”

The dedicated private 5G network enables businesses across industries to transform their operations, advance automation, improve safety and achieve unprecedented indoor and outdoor connectivity. The network supports a wide range of use cases, including:

  • Asset tracking: Efficient tracking of assets in warehouses.
  • Automated robots and AGVs: Enabling seamless automation.
  • Flexible workspaces: Enabling optimised workflows.
  • Real-time process automation: Improving operational efficiency.
  • Voice and video communication: Enhancing collaboration.

With the high speeds, low latency and increased capacity of 5G, the network enables seamless integration of AI algorithms and real-time server applications across edge and cloud layers. This aligns with the central objective of proto_lab’s research projects, which focus on seamless AI integration under the leadership of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Noah Klarmann, Research Professor of AI in Technical Systems and Co-Director of proto_lab. By ensuring optimal process control and minimal latency for mobile users and devices, 5G paves the way for groundbreaking innovations in production, logistics and other fields, reflecting proto_lab’s visionary leadership and ambitious objectives. It also provides students with practical experience in 5G connectivity, equipping them with the skills to navigate and innovate in an increasingly digital and connected world.

The private 5G network is a prime example of Kontron’s commitment to advancing industrial transformation and supporting education through technology. The collaboration with TH Rosenheim and Mugler SE provides a pioneering model for the future, demonstrating how academia and industry can work together to shape tomorrow’s possibilities.
